Students vote for Staff Awards

An awards ceremony for inspirational and dedicated members of staff (as voted for by students) was held today.

Six winners were announced at the 2015 Student-led Staff Awards which celebrates the work of staff from all areas of Canterbury College. When students nominated staff, they had to explain why they deserved to win. The Students’ Union, which runs the awards, looked at what had been said about those with the most votes and picked a winner for each area (followed by an overall winner).

This year’s winners were...

Amy Flight – Drama & Dance tutor (Creative Skills)
Students said: “Amy always has a positive impact on the class, is encouraging and provides a fun way to learn.”

Melissa Mantle – Land-Based Studies tutor (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

Students said: “Melissa is willing to go the extra mile and adapts her teaching to students’ individual needs. People in her classes feel supported and leave lessons having learned more than they expected.”

Lisa Price – Health & Social Care tutor (Support Services)
Students said: “Lisa is compassionate, understanding and supportive. She is willing to dedicate a lot of time to ensure everybody feels supported and listened to.”

Vicki Smith – Student Counselling Coordinator (Cross-College Support)
Students said that: “Vicki always puts other people first and has a good nature while carrying out her job.”

Angela Klappa – Access to Higher Education lecturer (Higher Education)
Students said: “Angela has an enthusiastic and dynamic style of teaching, which is flexible to suit students’ different needs. She is also friendly, approachable and works outside of lesson time to ensure everybody succeeds.”

From the winners, Amy Flight was picked as Canterbury College’s overall Staff Member of the Year. She said: “It’s a lovely surprise to get the award. All staff put in so much hard work into teaching and inspiring students, and helping them get to where they want to be.”

Speaking about the winners and nominees, Canterbury College Principal Alison Clarke said that being nominated for a Student-led Staff Award was a real accolade.
